What type of glass is best for your beer?

There are many types of beer glasses, each with their own purpose.  Here are a few of the more popular styles, and the types of beer they were meant for:

Pilsner Glass

As you would guess….The Pilsner Glass is best used when drinking pilsner style beers, most pale lagers, and other light style beers.  These tall, slender, glasses are designed to show the color and maintain the carbonation of the beer.  The broad top maintains the head of the beer.

Tulip Glass

The Tulip Glass is designed for Belgian and Dutch style beers.  The design of the glass helps trap in the aroma and maintain a large head on top.  This glass can also be used for Scottish Ales, American double/imperial IPAs, barleywines and other aromatic beers.

Weizen Glass

The Weizen Glass is predominantly used for serving wheat beer. The glass is wider at the top and tapers down to a more narrow bottom.  The width is designed to release aroma and provide room for the characteristically thick heads produced by most wheat beers.

Flute Glass

The Beer Flute looks similar to a champagne flute and is designed for Belgian lambics or fruity beers.  The narrow shape helps display the sparkling color, while maintaining carbonation and providing a strong aromatic front.

Goblet Glass

The Goblet Glass is characteristically a large, stemmed, bowl-shaped glass designed for serving heavy Belgian ales, German bocks, and other big sipping beers. The Chalice (heavily promoted by Stella Artois) is similar to a goblet, only differing in glass thickness.  Some chalices are etched on the bottom to coax a stream of bubbles for maintaining a nice head.

Pint Glass

The only thing special about a pint glass is that it is designed for its measurement, an imperial pint.  Although it can be used for nearly any type of beer, you will enjoy your beer better in its appropriate glass listed above.  It is a versatile and durable beer glass that you can find in many homes and bars.

Beer Stein

A Beer Stein is a heavily ornamental looking mug great for souvenirs.  They are typically made from stone, pewter, porcelain, or even silver.  Some come with open tops, or hinged pewter lids.

Beer Boot

The beer boot is exactly what it sounds like, a glass boot created to hold beer.  It is great for parties and consuming large amounts of beer, but just remember not to tip the toe upwards while you’re drinking, or the air bubble will send beer pouring in your face.
